SIP Response Code Explorer

Explore common SIP provisional, success, redirection, request-failure, server-failure and global-failure responses without assuming a single root cause.

How to interpret a SIP response

A response code belongs to a transaction and is meaningful only with its source, method, Call-ID, CSeq, Via chain and preceding messages. A 401 or 407 can be a normal authentication challenge; a 403 is a policy refusal but does not state one universal reason; a 503 identifies temporary inability at the responding hop, not automatic carrier fault.

Evidence before escalation

  • Record UTC time and the controlled test scenario.
  • Identify the IP or trusted component that generated the response.
  • Preserve the matching request and any Reason/Q.850 information.
  • Redact credentials, Identity tokens and personal numbers before sharing.

From response code to evidence

Selecting a code provides a protocol-oriented starting point, not a root-cause verdict. Record the method and CSeq, preserve the matching request, identify the response source and inspect Reason or SDP. A provisional response, final rejection and server failure require different next steps. Authentication challenges such as 401 or 407 can be normal when followed by an authenticated retry.

For 403, follow identity and admission evidence without assuming STIR/SHAKEN is the cause. For 488, compare the exact offer transmitted to the rejecting hop with the supported codecs and encryption profile. For 503, determine whether Asterisk generated the response or received it, then inspect local resources, selected route and Retry-After. Each result links to its full guide and the Trace Decoder.

A defensible record includes UTC timestamp, Call-ID, CSeq, method, response code, immediate response source, Request-URI, sanitized From and PAI, Identity presence, Reason or Q.850, SDP presence, DIALSTATUS and HANGUPCAUSE. Those fields can contain sensitive identifiers, so redact before external sharing.

After a bounded correction, repeat the same authorized scenario and confirm the response ladder, answer, ACK and two-way media. A different response is new evidence rather than automatic resolution. Restore the prior state when the hypothesized control did not change the observed cause.

Verify the explorer result

Open the full guide linked by the selected code and compare its required evidence with the protected transaction. The tool’s short meaning is drawn from protocol semantics, but deployments can map internal causes into different outward responses. Confirm the immediate source, request method and dialog state before selecting a remediation. If the call traversed multiple attempts, keep each Call-ID or branch separate.

When escalating, state “the capture at Asterisk received code X from address Y for CSeq Z” rather than assigning ownership beyond the capture. Include Retry-After, Reason or SDP only when present. A missing optional header is itself an observation and should not be invented from expected behavior.

Operational assurance

Use the explorer during initial triage and training, not as an automated production decision engine. Protocol reason phrases are human-readable labels and can be customized or normalized; the numeric code, transaction, source and surrounding messages carry the dependable context. If a result links to several possible layers, collect the listed evidence before choosing one. Document which possibilities were eliminated and why. Clear the selected case from shared screens after the session.

Limitations

The explorer does not know which route, account or endpoint produced the pasted observation. It cannot read a Reason header unless the operator records it separately, and it cannot distinguish a locally generated response from an upstream response without packet direction. Treat its evidence list as a checklist. When the checklist is complete, use the deep guide’s matrix to choose the next read-only command before considering any configuration change.

Close the triage safely

Record the chosen deep guide and evidence still missing, then clear the working notes from shared screens. Do not convert a possible cause into an incident conclusion until the responsible-hop evidence supports it.

Implementation closure

Inputs required

A sanitized response code plus the observed generating hop and transaction context.

Change surface

Browser-only triage selection; no network or PBX configuration is changed.

Apply and reload semantics

Select the exact response and follow the linked evidence path; no reload or restart applies.

Healthy result

The result identifies protocol meaning, evidence to collect, and a bounded next check.

Failure path

If the source hop or full transaction is missing, collect it before acting on the suggested causes.

Stop conditions

Stop when the code is being used as proof of a root cause or when testing risks rate limits or policy violations.

Definition of done

The response is attributed, sensitive data stays local/sanitized, and the next action includes a verification step.
